SUMMARY:2022 Construction Law Seminar
DESCRIPTION:The 2022 ALFA International Construction Law Seminar took place on July 27-29\, 2022\, at the Ritz-Carlton\, Bacara in Santa Barbara\, California. \nSometimes the Third Time’s a Charm: Using Hindsight and Perseverance to Build Into the Future\nView the 2022 Construction Law Seminar Program Brochure\nView the 2022 Construction Law Seminar Course Materials\nAs they say\, sometimes the third time is a charm. That can be true in sports\, as a team seeks an elusive championship\, in business\, where a deal that historically got away is finally closed and in construction\, where starting and stopping projects unfortunately became the norm for numerous reasons over the past two years. Which brought us to the beautiful Ritz-Carlton\, Bacara in Santa Barbara where we\, construction industry counsel and colleagues\, finally – after two postponements – came together to enjoy each other’s company and foster business relationships that may extend into the years ahead. \n\nIf the last two years has taught us anything\, it is that hindsight and perseverance can benefit contractors and those in the industry to build better in the future. In early 2020\, the industry was moving forward at almost breakneck speed\, with tower cranes dotting skylines and infrastructure and construction projects possessing significant line items on government and corporate budgets. Currently\, construction remains a significant economic driver\, with demand remaining exceptionally high\, though at times negatively impacted by ongoing COVID restrictions\, workforce supply impacts and materials shortages and delays. Using a little hindsight\, and the same perseverance that has thrust the construction industry forward through the last two years\, we will tackle these issues and others confronting the industry. \nThe seminar included plenary sessions with experts addressing how significant world events in recent years have impacted the construction industry internationally\, how modular construction will shape the future of construction and litigating construction matters in a post-COVID world. \nBeyond the plenary sessions\, the seminar was divided into three tracks\, separated chronologically\, rather than by subject matter as in past seminars. Track 1 was driven by discussions on what lessons construction industry counsel have learned in the past to better position their companies for future success. Track 2 offered timely discussions of the impacting issues of today. And finally\, Track 3 provided a glimpse into the legal and risk topics that are expected to impact the future of the industry in the years ahead.
